We are sorry that we missed creating a new Flip’s Photo Focus for you last month.

We hope that you had a very nice Mother’s Day!
Happy Father’s Day!
And Congratulations to all of you 2009 Graduates!

Jesse’s mom was away on Mother’s day. Celebrating the birth of our new niece Allison Jeanne. Born on May 1st.

Even though May is such an extremely busy month for us, we had to sneak away for one night to the Avila Beach Blues Festival. We were lucky to enjoy such a beautiful and sunny day in Avila. If you love to listen to the Blues and ever get the chance to see Shemekia Copeland and Susan Tedeschi, I say go. You will have a great time.

Capturing the Spring Fun:

At the Cement Boat:

Spring is a great time to go to the beach for your Portrait Sitting. The sun is staying up just a little bit longer and sets at a key place on the ocean for sunset sittings. We can capture both a fun beach scene and a romantic sunset scene that will capture the hearts of you and your family.

SVHS Fashion Fantastic:
Scotts Valley High School students put on the Dressed to the 09’s a Fashion Show and dress sale to benefit the SVHS arts and academic programs. The Fashion Show student models presented the different styles available for sale after the show. The models did a great job walking down the red carpet catwalk. The event coordinators put together a well-organized event with a real fashion show feel. And the dresses, I loved them all. It was great to be the official photographer. Next year I strongly suggest skipping the mall and joining us at the SVHS Fashion Show & Auction for your prom dresses & tuxes.

Jason Mersman, CPA:
What a great person and wonderful family! Jason Mersman of Peak Accounting Services, Inc. came to us to purchase a gift certificate for family portraits as a gift to his wife for Valentines Day. Despite this season being one of the more busy times of the year for an accountant Jason and his family came in and we all had a great time.

Thank you Mersman family and best of luck through the rest of the tax season.

Blues Photo Tip:

Composition tips for better photography:

How to compose your photograph for maximum impact!
Images are much more interesting if taken from a different perspective.

Take these photos for instance, where the child has been placed dead center of the shot. Now compare it to this one where the child is positioned to the left of the frame, balancing the composition of the photograph, this helps create interest.
When it comes to photography, don't be afraid to go outside your normal frame of mind and learn to experiment a little.

Capturing the Spring Fun:

The Hermann Family:

Spring is here!

We are starting to get back outdoors for those family portrait sittings after this long winter. Here is a family reunion that we photographed at the Santa Lucia Preserve in Carmel. This place is beautiful! However, it lacks one important thing that other photographers may find useful, electric outlets. Not us though, we have an amazing battery powered system that will help us create the best lighting for your family portraits.

Susan’s Trip to Oregon:

2 Special men in my life celebrated their birthdays this last month. My father celebrated his 60th and my nephew turned 1! My family gathered together on the coast of beautiful Oregon for the festivities. The weather was amazingly pleasant compared to the raging storm in our neck of the woods at that time. Since my nephew’s mom (my sister) is a big lover of the ocean and considering the lack of one in the Midwest, we decided that taking his 1-year-old pictures at the beach would be very memorable and fun.
It was hard for me to leave Jesse along with the continuous demands of our business, but getting together for these important events was something I could not pass up and will always remember.

The Fallen Officer’s Foundation Ball:
Jesse was honored to be the official photographer at the 3rd annual Fallen Officer’s Foundation Ball on February 14th. It was a red tie event where police officer’s, city officials and their special squeezes came to help raise funds for an important foundation. Jesse had a lot of fun and was bale to capture not only romantic portraits for them but even had a couple take it to the next level be acting like Bonnie and Clyde.

Blues Photo Tip:

Have fun!

People are always doing funny things, often where you least expect them. Being ready to capture them means you won't have your friends looking skeptically at you when you describe the scene. A picture can tell the story for you. You may set up your own funny situation and take a picture of it. It can provide a lot of laughs when you do so, and even more laughter afterwards when everyone looks at the pictures.

Our trip to Arizona

We were 2 of nearly 15,000 photographers who gathered from all over the world in Phoenix, Arizona this last month for the Imaging USA Photography Convention. We had conferences in Phoenix’s brand new convention center where some of the rooms where more big than some of our smaller schools combined! What was funny about this trip was a good friend of ours was also at the Convention Center the same time we were with nearly 14,000 other meteorologists at a Meteorologist Convention. Downtown Phoenix was busy!

We were graced with many I’d say celebrity photographers including Anne Geddes. She held a meet and greet and book signing. Anne is a very creative and soft-spoken woman. We were also fortunate to meet some other wonderfully talented photographers of whom we quickly became friends with. Lindsay and Erin who own Cherry Creek Photo in North Dakota and Trista who owns Look Who Just Blouin in?.
We attended an awards ceremony for all the Portrait Studios representing the Family Portrait Fundraiser. Over $60,000 was raised for Operation Smile. This donation will help over 200 children with facial deformities around the world.

Although our trip was mostly a lot of class time we did fit in a little time for sight seeing. I was able to wander the Phoenix Desert Botanical Gardens one afternoon, and we also were able to take some landscape portraits during a beautiful Arizona sunset at Papago Park east of Phoenix.
There was also an Expo open to us where hundreds and hundreds of Photography related companies came to display their products. It was a photography candy store!
Overall it was an amazing trip it not only stirred-up our creative juices but brought back many new ideas from some of our Nation’s top Portrait Studios. We do look forward to sharing these with you.

Happy Valentines Day!

Blues Photo Tip:

Get in close!

Really close! Try ‘macro” photography. To make use of this digital photography tip have a look on your camera for a ‘macro’ mode. Switch it on, and then get really close to your subject- most point and shoot cameras will focus from about 10cm in macro mode.
